Innaugural VCU / Farrior Foundation Sickle Cell Gala a Huge Success!

On the evening of Friday, April 27th, over 130 people came to the downtown Richmond Marriott to attend and enjoy what was supposed to be a standard fundraiser / gala to support the sickle cell programs of the VCU Medical Center. What they got was something that was far from standard and deemed to be a tremendous success by all in attendance.

The evening included a dinner, dancing, a silent auction, presentations by VCU, the Farrior Foundation and a keynote by Ryan Clark. The evening took a turn when comedian / master of ceremony Bam Bamm Micah White took over and had the crowd laughing incessantly at his humor which he wove into an extremely impromtu and successful live auction.

The mood then took an unexpected serious turn when an 11 year old bone marrow transplant / sickle cell patient, Darryl Klu and his brother Darren took the stage. Darryl captivated and silenced the room with his sharing his personal story of his battle with sickle cell anemia from his having a stroke at the age of 8 to his now being sickle cell free and living as normal a life as possible.

The ballroom was silent with the exception of not having a dry eye in the house and Darryl's speech ending with a standing ovation from everyone in the room. To say the evening was a resounding success would be an understatement.

The Farrior Foundation would like to sincerely thank everyone who was involved, touched, or supported this event!

Digital Divide Initiative

Through a collaborative arrangement with Voice To The World, the Foundation is providing computer technology and literacy training in a series of after school programs designed to reach underserved and at risk youth.

James Farrior Foundation Scholarship Programs

The Foundation awards four scholarships each year:

James Farrior Scholarship – awarded to an outstanding male athlete based on merit, overcoming adversity, combined with outstanding community service

Mary Catherine Farrior Memorial Scholarship – awarded to an outstanding female athlete with the same attributes as the James Farrior scholarship

Frankie Thomas Memorial Scholarship – awarded to an outstanding football player

Chris White Memorial Scholarship – awarded to an outstanding basketball player either male or female

Coats at Christmas Program

Farrior 51 Bone Marrow Registry Drive

An ongoing effort to increase bone marrow registrants within the Commonwealth of Virginia by 5,100 registrants. This drive is administered through collaboration with the National Bone Marrow registry at most, if not all James Farrior Foundation events.

Tree of Hope Program

An annual program held in November whereby disadvantaged families are provided turkeys and accompaniments to provide hope during the Thanksgiving season.

Gift of Sight Program

An annual program held in October whereby disadvantaged youth are given the opportunity for free eye exams and the provision of free corrective eye wear.

Impact 51 Program

The Impact 51 Program is intended to provide tutoring and mentoring for disadvantaged youths and those at risk.

Impact 51 is provided in collaboration with the sports management department of Virginia State University, the Rudy Johnson Foundation, and the Ru John Foundation.

Families in Crisis

This program assists those who are confronted with circumstances beyond their control and demonstrate need with everyday life issues. The program offers fundamental support including the provision of food, clothing, and shelter.

Families in Crisis is a needs-based program.

Tackling Justice Program

An annual program held in April whereby youth at risk are escorted on a field trip for a tour of the justice departmernt with accompanying educational sessions with judges, attorneys, and inmates.
